Beginners Guitar 

Wednesdays 19:00 - 20.30 

A weekly stand alone guitar class suitable for complete beginners, or lapsed players who wish to get back into playing. Led by Pete Giles, in a relaxed and informal style, with small groups. You are welcome to just one session, or come along every week to build up your skills - bring your guitar (or ask about borrowing one) Costs £10 per session, booking required.

PAINT in the style of  ALFRED WALLIS 

Alfred Wallis (1855 - 1942) was a naive artist who lived and worked in St.Ives and became an inspiration to artist such as Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood. In this session you can make your own drawings of St.Ives as a basis for a painting in his style.

Zoe Eaton will lead you into making your own painting, drawing on the styles, themes, techniques and colours of Alfred Wallis. This workshop is suitable for all ages and abilities, and complete novices!

Beach Treasure Mobiles 

'Beach Treasure Mobiles' is great for all ages, we will be using beach finds including shells, drift wood, sea glass, sea plastic etc that can be drilled, painted, wire wrapped, and combined with beads ..then construct into mobiles, light catchers, simple necklaces and charms.

We have all the materials and tools you will need, but feel free to bring your own beach find treasures to make your creations extra personal.

SAND CASTED CANDLES

Create beautiful and unique candles, by casting wax into sand molds, then decorate with beach finds such as shells, sea glass or pebbles. Learn about different wax types,safe working methods, correct wicks and how to colour and fragrance with essential oils. We will be using eco soya pillar wax - The finished candles have a light sand crust and are ideal for indoors or outdoors. You will have time to make about 3 candles of varying sizes.

PAINT A MINI Masterpiece!

Explore the work of some of St. Ives based abstract artists, including Terry Frost and Patrick Heron and  Study the colours and methods of these artists, to use as a starting point for your own abstract painting.

We will start with paper collage exercises to explore shapes and colour, and find your composition. Transfer your design to a little canvas, and finish with acrylic paints.

FUNKY FELT MAKING

Gain a hands on introduction to this wonderful ancient craft, with Jo McIntosh.  Learn how to use  the 'wet felting' technique, to build up layers of woolen fibres - that are locked together with a technique of rolling, in a mat.  We will be using  woollen fleeces, dyed in an array of lovely colours, to build up your finished panel.  With this method, you can make a pattern or create a little picture - that can be hung on the wall as an art piece, or sewn into make something else.  

This is a lovely activity, suitable for all ages (very young children will need help with the rolling bit)!  Once you have mastered the technique, you can even do it at home.

DRAWING WITH WIRE 

Create some wonderful 3D wire drawings, taking inspiration from the work of Alexander Calder. He was the originator of the 'moblile' but also produced wire figures that are like drawings made in space.

We will start with some 'continuous line drawings' to develop your design - then create your sculpture using aluminium modelling wire. Not recommended for children under the age of 5. Adults £15 / Kids £10

Kids Printing Club 

Come along & join in a fun packed morning, printing cards & 2D objects.  The kids will have a chance to create their on mono foam stamps & play around with  different textile surfaces. We will be using Sponges, print tools and papers and the lovely printing paints from Pick Pretty Paints, with Tutor Erin Lacy.

£10 materials will all be provided. Please make sure to come prepared to get messy.

Or maybe you have a guitar and started, but have since lapsed playing.This one day workshop really is an excellent way to kick-start your playing, and lay good foundations for future improvement. With Tutor Pete Giles, who has over 20 years experience teaching adults to play. Pete has developed an easy system to get started, with emphasis on practical skills over theory, using popular tunes, and a combination of individual and group exercises. Taught in small groups, there is plenty of time for individual feedback.

By the end of the day you should be able to:

  • Play 4 chords, 
  • Understand how to read 'guitar tabs'.
  • Have an insight into the principles of tuning 
  • Play a complete song all the way through!

Beginners Watercolour 4 week course 

This course is designed for people new to painting with watercolour. Over 4 weeks you will pick up many skills and techniques to get you really started. Learn to mix colour, . use washes, achieve different techniques and textures, preparing your paper and much more.

Week 1 - How to make a 'Wash' -correct paint consistency, introduction to basic tools, brushes and papers.  Create abstract patterns

Week 2 - Textures and techniques - tips and ideas including wax resist, salt wash, lifting, scratching, brush work and more - to create fruit and plants.

Week 3 -Painting shells and Seaweed

Week 4 - Pen and Wash techniques. Create your own town or landscape.

Natural Soap Making

A 2 hour workshop to make lovely, custom hand made soap bars, using all natural ingredients. We start with an organic vegetable melt and pour soap base, a great crafters choice for quick and safe resutls.

We have lots of lovely ingredients for you to experiment with,and mix and match to create your own favourite recipes. Learn about materials that can add bulk,texture, colour and decoration. Also find out about the natural beneficial properties of some herbs, spices, dried fruits and essential oils.

Introduction to Bas Relief Carving

Gain an introduction to Bas Relief carving, and make a decorative tile with plaster. Bas Relief is a form of sculpture, where just one side of a carved material can be seen, usually with a flat back. This decorative technique can often be seen in architectural fixings, tiles or artwork.(image used is from an ancient Cambonian stone carving).

During this session we will look at design ideas, carving tools and techniques Learn how to mix Plaster of Paris, and then carve into a pre-made plaster block. Plaster is soft to work with until fully set, and an ideal material to gain quick results. It is also great for beginners and children to achieve lovely results. Leave with a carved tile, that can be painted at a later date when fully dried out, or left white and simply sealed. 

Makes a lovely art piece for the home or garden. Be Prepared to get messy!

FANTASTIC PLASTIC FUSION

Learn how to recycle old plastic carrier bags into a strong, waterproof material. Plastic bags are cut and fused with a hot iron in layers - to make an A3 sized material, that can be cut and sewn like any other fabric. We will guide you through effective tips, techniques and design ideas. for your fabric. You can then turn your finished material into a clutch bag, phone, pencil/ glasses case, bunting or colourful wall hangings. We have templates, plastic snap fasteners and sewing machine available to complete your projects. No sewing experience is needed. £20 adults (kids £10) including materials.

Wild Spring Botanics 

Art Weekender

A weekend dedicated to capturing some of the wonderful flora that Cornwall has to offer at this time of year. Barnoon Workshop is situated just minutes from the South West Coastal path, beaches and wild contryside, with some of Britain's most beautiful views.

During the weekend, we will be drawing plein air, on short guided walks - including the lush wildness of the coastal path, and explore magnificant gardens and hidden spots in and around St.Ives.

Gain Tips and Techniques from our tutors on approaches to capturing the essence of plants, as they grow in their natural habitat - from tiny wild flowers to larger shrubs and trees, plus approaches to capturing quick landscape sketches. Back at the studio, you can spend more time developing your sketches with a variety of drawing media and water-colours.

Leave with a full sketchbook of studies, and a portfolio of more finished works on lovely paper surfaces. Suitable for all levels of ability.

Cost £130 - includes materials, refreshments and picnic lunches on both days.

3.00 -  4.30  pm Studio work drawing botanics, exploring approaches to mixed media, including  inks, pastels, pencils and watercolours, - on a variety of surfaces including vintage books, hand made paper and cartridge paper - afternoon tea

4.30 - 6.30 Free studio time to complete works

Sunday AM Studio work followed by a Town exploration walk around gardens, formal planting and hidden spots. lunch 

2 PM - Visit of Babara Hepworth museum and gardens, drawing in gardens.

4 - 5pm - Optional extra studio time, considating portfolios and sketchbooks.

HOW TO BE ABSTRACT!

A two day course to explore approaches to abstract art, and find your own abstract style - finishing with a painting on canvas.  During the course we will be looking at different types and approaches to abstraction including expressionism, geometric, organic, using the senses and reductionist techniques. Get to explore these approaches with a variety exercises and drawing media and collage.  Combining this with looking at other artists work, group discussions and gallery visits.  

Find your own preferred methods and style to create your own painting.

The course fee includes all materials, a Tate visit and a pasty lunch on day two.

SCULPTURE With Breeze Blocks 

1 Day Course 11:00 - 16:00 

Gain an introduction to stone carving techniques - using breeze blocks! These are soft and easy to carve, and ideal for beginners. With Breeze blocks you can gain quick results, and complete a sculpture in a day.

Led by Zoe Eaton, who will take you through all the stages of: Design,  'Roughing Out' your sculpture, and then 'Finishing' with chisles and rasps. You can then paint your sculpture with masonry paint, or seal with PVA. By the end of the day you will leave with a sculpture suitable for indoor our outdoor display. No experience needed, all materials included. Please wear old clothing and closed footwear - gets very messy!

First step is to draw your design, or bring a picture as inspiration, or choose from lots of our images and source material, or the stunning scenery to get you inspired.  

The next step is to transform your image into a 3D little sketch, or 'Maquette'.  This helps to visualise your sculpture, and work out the next stage of 'roughing out' - removing the excess stone to create a rough shape -and then get carving!

Nature Relief Tiles

Create beautiful art pieces with Plaster of Paris tiles! We will be using natural foraged materials, including plants, seaweed, shells, and seeds - then get creative with your own arrangements. With Zoe Eaton, learn how to create a mold with your chosen items, and mix Plaster of Paris to cast your mold. The Plaster picks up fantastic details, and makes a lasting durable cast.. You will have time to make 2 tiles - that look beautiful in natural white plaster, or can be painted later when fully dried.

'Pen and Wash' - Landscape

An afternoon where we will go outside to draw the stunning local scenery and experience the elements! Make a number of sketches that can be further developed. Zoe Eaton will provide advice on pen drawing techniques, how to create interesting lines and marks, and other approaches to quickly capturing what you see. Back at the studio will show you how to lay a 'wash' over your drawings to create depth and colour - using water colours, inks and quality paper surfaces. The class is suitable for all levels of ability, complete beginners welcome. Tools and materials included.
