Open Drawing Class

Every Monday 10:00 - 12:00

An open drawing class for all levels and abilities - The sessions are taught by experienced tutors, in a friendly and informative style. Each week we explore different themes and media. from the local landscape, to botanical, portraits, people and animals! All welcome, materials included but feel free to bring your own. Booking advised, £10 per session (£7.50 concs)

Beginners Guitar 

Wednesdays 19:00 - 20.30 

A weekly stand alone guitar class suitable for complete beginners, or lapsed players who wish to get back into playing. Led by Pete Giles, in a relaxed and informal style, with small groups. You are welcome to just to come to one session, or come along every week to build up your skills - bring your guitar (or ask about borrowing one) Costs £10 per session, booking required.

Also if you require more private one to one tuition feel free to get in touch so we can arrange a convenient time.

£15 an hour or £25 for two hours.



Sunday 17 June 12 - 4.30 pm 

The 15 Minute Portrait Studio   

A contemporary twist on traditional seaside portraiture. You can drop in and get your portrait done in under 15 minutes, and take away an original piece of artwork for just £15. There is a choice of artists and styles to choose from. 

This weeks artists are:

  • Bobby Wotnot - Profile drawings, on shards of found St.Ives beach pottery,
  • Zoe Eaton - Expressive Line drawings in pen, with water colour washes 
  • Marie Keeling - Small Delicate graphite and ink drawings (image right)

POSTCARDS - Watercolour & Mixed Media

 Come and make your own arty postcards, based on scenes of St Ives. We will go out and do some quick sketches, that we can then use as a basis for postcard designs, whether realistic or more abstract. Back at the studio, get to explore with water-colours and mixed media (including inks, wax crayons, oil pastels and pens) to get some individual works. No experienced needed, and all materials included.

ALFRED WALLIS PAINTING WORKSHOP

Alfred Wallis (1855 - 1942) was a naive artist who lived and worked in St.Ives. Study a little of his life and working methods, and take inspiration as a basis for your own artwork. Pete Giles will lead you into making your own painting, drawing on the styles, themes, techniques and colours of Alfred Wallis. This workshop is suitable for all ages and abilities, and complete novices!

HAND MADE PAPER MAKING 

Learn how to make lovely hand made paper, from recycled materials.

We start by making a pulp, then use the dipping the deckle and mold process - something you can even do at home.

Experiment with decorations by adding seeds, glitter, dried flowers etc. The finished paper is ideal for art projects, cards and gifts.

Get tips with making a visual journal.

Gain an introduction to journaling and scrapbook techniques to keep as a visual diary of your holiday or your specific area of interest, be it bird watching, food & drink....

Start with a plain note book, or re-purpose an old book - then create themed template pages using different techniques, including collage, stamping, colour washes etc.

You can add tickets, postcards and other ephemera that one collects along the way. You then have a unique and beautiful art book - to add your own notes, drawings or photos!

ABSTRACT DRAWING

Delve into the world of patterns and abstraction, with artist Bobby Wotnot. Suitable for all levels of drawing ability, from complete beginners, to those who wish to find a different way to draw and discover a new language,

Duirng the session we will be using a combination of exploration exercises and discussion and finish with a final piece on heavyweight paper.

First we will explore shapes and lines, as a basis for building pattern - then Introduce colour with coloured pencils, markers pens, compressed charcoal etc. In the second hour we will embark on your final drawing, building from the style you have been developing in the first hour. SAND CAST CANDLE MAKING

Create beautiful and unique candles, by casting wax into sand molds, then decorate with beach finds such as shells, sea glass or pebbles.

Learn about different wax types, safe working methods, correct wicks and how to colour and fragrance with essential oils.We will be using eco soya pillar wax - The finished candles have a light sand crust and are ideal for indoors or outdoors. You will have time to make about 3 candles of varying sizes.

Summer Flowers in Watercolour 

A watercolour session dedicated to capturing beautiful summer flowers.

This will be led by artist Zoe Eaton, who will demonstrate how capture the essence of flowers using: pen and wash - watercolour washes, wax resist and wet in wet techniques. Begin with practice drawings and experiment with paint effects before finishing on lovely watercolour paper.

No experience in using watercolour needed, and all materials included.

PRINTING WITH PETALS

Create beautiful organic prints - with this technique of 'pounding' plants, and extracting their natural pigments - an ancient technique used by many cultures. A 2 hour workshop to make lovely, custom hand made soap bars, using all natural ingredients. We start with an organic vegetable melt and pour soap base, a great crafters choice for quick and safe resutls.We have lots of lovely ingredients for you to experiment with,and mix and match to create your own favourite recipes. Learn about materials that can add bulk,texture, colour and decoration. An afternoon where we will go outside to draw the stunning local scenery and experience the elements!

Make a number of sketches that can be further developed.We will provide advice on pen drawing techniques, how to create interesting lines and marks, and other approaches to quickly capturing what you see. Back at the studio will show you how to lay a 'wash' over your drawings to create depth and colour - using water colours, inks and quality paper surfaces.

FANTASTIC PLASTIC FUSION

Learn how to recycle old plastic carrier bags into a strong, waterproof material. Plastic bags are cut and fused with a hot iron in layers - to make an A3 sized material, that can be cut and sewn like any other fabric. We will guide you through effective tips, techniques and design ideas for your fabric.

You can then turn your finished material into a clutch bag, phone, pencil/ glasses case, bunting or colourful wall hangings.

We have templates, plastic snap fasteners and sewing machine available to complete your projects. No sewing experience is needed.

£20 adults (kids £10) including materials, but feel free to bring along any interesting or colourful bags.

SILVERPOINT DRAWING

Draw like an old Master! Silverpoint or Metalpoint is an exquisite technique, famously used by renaissance artists including Hans Holbein The Younger and Albrecht Durer. This drawing technique uses real silver and other metals to make images. Drawing on specially prepared surfaces, delicate and responsive results can be achieved, with a soft sheen and permanent finish. The drawings can then be tinted with water colours , inks or gouache.During this workshop with Zoe Eaton, learn how to prepare a variety of paper surfaces and gesso boards, explore the use of tools and metals including silver, bronze and aluminium, and experiment with mark making techniques. During the afternoon we will work on a final drawing, on a gesso panel, in your own style - adapting the technique for contemporary works.

COLOUR PENCIL TECHNIQUES - Masterclass


Get the most from Colour Pencils! Experiment with a range of pencil types including :- standard pencils, and newer types on the market including Blendable , Prisma & Polycolour,, Pastel, Water Colour, ...and gain exciting tips and techniques. With Zoe Eaton & Pete Giles, creators of the Colour S.tIves colouring book - who show you how to achieve a host of effects, including 'dry' blending, Stippling, Hatching, Scumbling, Layering, Burnishing, Frottage and Scratching in.. Some makes work with 'wet' blending using water, baby oil and alcohol. We will work on a exercises, drawing projects a look at work of contemporary artists who use colour pencils.

The workshop includes materials and a copy of our illustrated book #colourstives (A4 book with 16 images of St.Ives)

THE ART OF COLLAGE

Collage, a French word for a technique to create an assemblage of different forms.

Get Cutting, ripping, gluing and sticking and maybe add drawing and writing to make your complete images.

Take inspiration for your artwork from the local landscape, or maybe try something more surreal with a look at the use of 'Photomontage' used in Surrealism and Pop Art, and examples of contemporary collage used today.

DRAWING WITH WIRE

Create some wonderful 3D wire drawings, taking inspiration from the work of Alexander Calder.who created a large amount of wire portraits, animals and circus performers.

We will start with some 'continuous line drawings' to develop your design and find the right shape. Create your sculpture using aluminium modelling wire, which is soft and easy to manipulate.

Get to experiment with coloured wire and add beads. Not recommended for children under the age of 5. Adults £15 / Kids £10.

THE ART OF MONOPRINT

Monoprint literally means single - a print technique using line and mark making directly from an inked surface, thereby creating a different image with each paper print. You can also retrace a drawing to produce multiple versions, all slightly different. It is a wonderfully tactile method, that produces a host of interesting, and sometimes unexpected results, great for those new to printing.

The workshop is led by Zoe Eaton and Pete Giles who will show how to develop your mage from drawings or photographs, and abstract mark making. Using single colour, water based bloc printing inks, which can then be tinted with watercolours or drawing media. We will also look at how this medium is used by contemporary artists such as Tracy Emin.

Wild Botanical Weekend

Spend a weekend exploring some of Cornwall's plants and fauna, as they grow in their natural habitat. Barnoon Workshop is situated just minutes from a wide diversity of environments including the South West Coastal path, Town Gardens and hidden spots, numerous St.Ives beaches and lush wild countryside, with some of Britain's most beautiful views. The weekend includes plenty of outdoor drawing, with tips and Techniques from our tutors on approaches to capturing the essence of plants, from tiny wild flowers to larger shrubs and trees. THE ART OF MONOPRINT

Monoprint literally means single - a print technique using line and mark making directly from an inked surface, thereby creating a different image with each paper print. You can also retrace a drawing to produce multiple versions, all slightly different. It is a wonderfully tactile method, that produces a host of interesting, and sometimes unexpected results, great for those new to printing.

The workshop is led by Zoe Eaton and Pete Giles who will show how to develop your mage from drawings or photographs, and abstract mark making. Using single colour, water based bloc printing inks, which can then be tinted with watercolours or drawing media. We will also look at how this medium is used by contemporary artists such as Tracy Emin.

SILVERPOINT DRAWING

Silverpoint or Metalpoint is an exquisite technique, first employed by renaissance artists - using real silver and other metals to make images.

Drawing on specially prepared surfaces, delicate and responsive results can be achieved, with a soft sheen and permanent finish. The drawings can then be tinted with water colours , inks or gouache. During this workshop with Zoe Eaton, prepare a variety of surfaces and grounds, explore the use of tools and metals, and experiment with mark making techniques.

SCULPTURE With Breeze Blocks 

1 Day Course 10:00 - 16:00 

Gain an introduction to stone carving techniques - using breeze blocks! These are soft and easy to carve, and ideal for beginners. With Breeze blocks you can gain quick results, and complete a sculpture in a day.

Led by Zoe Eaton, who will take you through all the stages of: Design,  'Roughing Out' your sculpture, and then 'Finishing' with chisles and rasps. You can then paint your sculpture with masonry paint, or seal with PVA. By the end of the day you will leave with a sculpture suitable for indoor our outdoor display. No experience needed, all materials included. Please wear old clothing and closed footwear - gets very messy!

Week 1 - How to make a 'Wash' -correct paint consistency, introduction to basic tools, brushes and papers. Create abstract patterns

Week 2 - Textures and techniques - tips and ideas including wax resist, salt wash, lifting, scratching, brush work and more - to create fruit and plants.

Week 3 -Painting shells and Seaweed

Week 4 - Pen and Wash techniques. Create your own town or landscape.
